You picked the stone. You know what size you need. Now comes the part where a beautiful cabochon either becomes a finished piece — or ends up in the scrap drawer with a chip out of one edge.
Setting a cabochon means securing a domed, unfaceted stone into metal using a technique that grips the stone's curve rather than its edges. The four methods that cover almost every project are bezel setting, wire wrapping, modified prongs, and cold connections including adhesive. Which one you reach for depends on the stone's shape, its thickness, how it was treated, and how much heat it can survive.

How Do You Set a Cabochon in a Bezel?
Bezel setting wraps a thin collar of metal around the base of the stone, then folds the top edge of that collar inward until it grips the dome. It's the traditional Southwest method, it works with almost any shape, and it protects the stone's most vulnerable edge.
What You Need
- Bezel wire — fine silver is standard because it's soft enough to push over cleanly. Sterling works but fights you.
- Backplate — sheet metal, usually 22–20 gauge sterling.
- Bezel pusher and burnisher — the pusher does the work, the burnisher smooths the result.
- Solder, torch, flux, pickle — for building the bezel cup only.
- Files, sandpaper, polishing setup.
Step by Step: Bezel Setting a Cabochon
- Measure the bezel wire around the stone. Wrap it around the widest point of the base, mark the overlap, and cut so the ends butt together with no gap. Too loose and the stone rattles; too tight and you'll never seat it.
- Solder the bezel into a closed ring. Stone nowhere near the bench at this stage.
- Test the fit. The stone should drop in and sit level. If it binds, stretch the bezel slightly on a mandrel. If it swims, cut and resolder shorter. Do this now — after it's on the backplate is too late.
- Solder the bezel to the backplate. Use medium or easy solder and make sure it flows all the way around, or you'll get a gap that catches pickle and discolors later.
- Trim the bezel height. File it down so it stands about 1 mm above where the dome starts curving away. This is the step people rush.
- Finish everything before the stone goes in. Sand, polish, oxidize, add your bail or ring shank. Once the stone is set, you can't reach half of it.
- Seat the stone and push the bezel. Work opposite sides — north, south, east, west — then fill in between. Never push all the way around in one direction; that walks the stone off-center and can crack it.
- Burnish the edge smooth. A light pass with the burnisher tightens the metal against the dome and removes tool marks.
Bezel Height: The Number Most People Get Wrong
A bezel that's too tall won't fold over cleanly — it buckles, wrinkles, or hides the stone's best color. A bezel that's too short won't hold at all.
The working rule: your bezel should sit roughly 1 mm above the point where the stone's dome begins to curve inward. On a high-dome cabochon that's a fairly short bezel. On a low-dome or nearly flat stone you'll need more height, because there's less curve for the metal to catch. Freeform stones with an uneven girdle may need the bezel trimmed to different heights around the perimeter — check it at several points, not just one.
How Do You Wire Wrap a Cabochon?
Wire wrapping secures the stone with a frame of wire instead of a soldered collar. No torch, no solder, no pickle — which makes it the go-to for anyone without a full metalsmithing setup, and for stones you'd rather not expose to heat at all.
Step by Step: A Basic Wrap
- Cut your frame wires. Square wire (typically 21–20 gauge) holds its position better than round and gives you flat surfaces that grip. Cut several lengths well longer than the stone's perimeter.
- Bind the bundle. Wrap a finer gauge binding wire tightly around the middle of the frame bundle to hold it together.
- Form the frame around the stone. Bend the bundle around the girdle, keeping tension even. The binding point usually becomes the bottom or the bail.
- Split the wires front and back. This is what actually holds the stone — some wires bend forward over the dome, some fold back behind it. Aim for at least three or four contact points spaced around the stone.
- Add decorative wraps and the bail. Swirls, coils, and twists aren't just decoration; each one adds another point of tension.
- Tighten and tuck. Press every wire end flat against the back. A wire end that snags a sweater is the most common complaint on wrapped pieces.
When Wrapping Beats a Bezel
Reach for wire when the stone is a freeform shape a bezel would fight, when it's thin enough that a bezel would swallow it, when you want the piece to stay reversible or repairable, or when you simply don't want to introduce heat anywhere near the material. It's also faster — a wrap is an afternoon, a bezel is a weekend.
Can You Use Prongs on a Cabochon?
Yes, with modification. Standard prong heads are built for faceted stones with a defined girdle to grip. A cabochon has a smooth continuous curve, so the prongs need to be shaped to lay against the dome rather than hook under an edge.
Prongs work best on cabochons with a pronounced dome and a defined base — high-dome ovals and rounds especially. They struggle on low-dome and freeform stones, where there's simply not enough curve for the prong tip to bite. The payoff is light: prongs leave the stone's perimeter open, which suits translucent material where a solid bezel would kill the glow.
Practical note — three or four prongs is usually enough, and you want them shorter than you'd use on a faceted stone. Long prongs on a cabochon look like antennae and catch on everything.
Glue-In Settings and Cold Connections
When Adhesive Is Actually the Right Call
Adhesive has a reputation problem in metalsmithing circles, and some of it is earned. But there are jobs where it's the correct answer: shallow stones with no edge for a bezel to grip, inlay and channel work, production runs on pre-made bezel cups, and pieces where the stone sits in a recess that mechanically supports it anyway.
Use a two-part epoxy rated for jewelry rather than a cyanoacrylate — it stays flexible, survives temperature swings, and doesn't fog. Clean both surfaces with alcohol first, use less than you think you need, and let it cure fully before you touch it. Bear in mind that any adhesive on a porous stone is essentially permanent.
Riveting and Other Cold Connections
Cold connections join metal without heat — rivets, tabs, screws, and captured settings. For cabochon work, tab settings are the most useful: small metal tabs cut into a backplate and folded over the stone, functioning like a bezel you never had to solder. Rivets are more often used to attach a stone-bearing element to the rest of a piece.
Cold connections shine on mixed-metal designs, on pieces combining materials that can't take a torch together, and on anything you might want to disassemble later.

Setting Mistakes That Crack Stones
Most cabochons that break at the bench break for one of five reasons.
- Soldering with the stone in place. Never do this. Stabilized cabochons contain resin that will scorch, cloud, or discolor under a torch, and untreated natural stones can fracture from thermal shock. Every solder joint gets finished before the stone goes anywhere near the piece.
- Pushing the bezel in one continuous direction. This drags the stone off-center and concentrates pressure on one edge. Always work opposite sides alternately.
- A bezel that's too tight. If you're forcing the stone in, you're already loading it. Adjust the metal, not the stone.
- Skipping the fit test. Checking the fit before soldering to the backplate takes thirty seconds and saves the whole piece.
- Polishing an already-set stone. A buffing wheel catching a cabochon edge will pull it out of the setting or chip it. Finish first, set last.
Matching the Stone to the Technique
The setting method you have in mind should influence what you buy, not the other way around.
Treatment matters. Natural turquoise is untreated and unaltered — beautiful, and worth handling thoughtfully during setting. Stabilized turquoise has been hardened with resin, a standard industry practice that makes the material more forgiving under bezel pressure. Neither is better across the board; they just behave differently at the bench.
